The Advantages of a Bespoke Kitchen

Widely considered the heart of the house, kitchens are where homelife unfolds. Whether for meal times, parties, or midnight snacks - most people agree that a comfortable kitchen is key to a thriving living space.

Increasingly, homeowners are choosing to install bespoke kitchens, as a means to create a truly one of a kind design which reflects their personality and lifestyle. Rather than settling for the limited choices off-the-shelf kitchens provide, everything is built around your vision, down to the finest details.

With bespoke designs, flatpack furniture frustration, awkwardly opening cabinets and questionable colour palettes are things of the past. But is it worth the investment?

We’ve outlined three main advantages of going bespoke with your kitchen to help you make your mind up…

Made to Measure

Whatever challenges your living space poses - wonky walls, complicated corners, and tenacious tiles - we’ve seen it all. Regardless of the shape of your room, bespoke kitchens are flexible: they’re built around the space you have, rather than making your kitchen fit the flatpack.

Wasted space and misused areas are often the case with fitted kitchens as square pegs are forced into round holes. Yet, a bespoke kitchen optimises every inch, offering more storage solutions, inventively designed to suit your needs.

The London Kitchen Company did a bespoke refurbishment for an awkwardly shaped Finsbury-park based kitchen. The ceiling was angled, making installation of cabinets difficult without custom design. As a result, we created bespoke cabinets with pull-out oak spice racks, designed not only around the difficult ceiling, but the client’s spice jars. Yep... that’s how bespoke we go!

When it comes to standard kitchen installations, unusual rooms often become like a game of tetris, gone wrong. Rather than fitting snuggly, you settle for the closest substitute for your space. But bespoke designs can transform a challenging room into a one of a kind spectacle.

For a commissioned refurbishment in Bermondsey, we created innovative shallow drinks cabinets out of otherwise dead space. Upon realising we needed to widen the kitchen’s peninsular to provide space for the hob, we got inventive - instead of accepting the void space as a fitted kitchen would. Now, the kitchen has an entire living-room-facing drinks bar, consisting of a wine cooler, glass and drinks cupboards!

Bespoke kitchens are designed in-line with your specifications, to make your space more functional and flexible. The result - your home life can be made considerably easier.

Further south in a Peckham-based kitchen, we designed a personalised cat feeding nook - an idea requested from our client to conveniently keep her pet’s bowls out of the way. We achieved this by creating a bespoke cat-sized cupboard lifted off the ground - out of paws-reach. Now that’s not something you can pick up at IKEA.

Of course, we can’t forget the most important element of a kitchen - taste. And we’re not just talking about what you’re cooking up in the oven; bespoke designs come with an aesthetic which is authentically yours.

With bespoke kitchen installations, you have the final say over the colours, finishes, and materials used. Whether your style choice is more contemporary, or leans towards a classic aesthetic - bespoke designs provide limitless opportunity to express your personality through design.

And the best bit? You needn’t compromise. You keep creative control whilst having access to experienced and knowledgeable designers who bring your ideas to life, as well as offering fresh perspectives and solutions.

In this Shoreditch kitchen, co-designed by The London Kitchen Company, our client wanted to match the colours of the cabinets, worktops, rails, sink and tap with the same matte grey colour. In addition, they wanted a bespoke oak splashback, matching the custom oak stair spindles which we installed alongside the kitchen.

Often, we’ve found opportunities to unify the aesthetic of a kitchen, as well as limiting waste, by incorporating the same materials into the kitchen itself. This is a major benefit of bespoke designs, because being in control of your materials means you can achieve consistency across your design. In this Fitzrovia kitchen, we used the same white matte material for the surfaces as the window seat, which breathes a sense of harmony into the space.

To sum up - bespoke kitchens provide you with endless opportunities to exclusively cater for your lifestyle through design, while making the most of the space you have.

Uniquely You

The way you use your kitchen is unlike anyone else. Maybe it’s the little things -  the spice rack located within arms length of the hob, ready for your fiery moments of flavoursome inspiration. Or inventively placed powerpoints for your kitchen table office. Perhaps it’s a larger design decision - a spacious tiled floor, awaiting some wine-infused kitchen radio dance moves.

However you use your kitchen, a bespoke design is built around you. Everything has a purpose, everything is in it’s right place.

We installed a custom kitchen for a tall Walthamstow-based couple, whose height meant kitchen worktops were always uncomfortably low. So, we designed and built a kitchen with a 1 meter high worktop, rather than the standard 900mm. We achieved this by simply building the cabinets larger than the standard size, which had a beneficial knock-on effect of having an extra 150mm of storage space in the cabinets, allowing for deeper drawers. Bespoke designs can transform problem situations into unique creative solutions.

Lasting Quality

Most ready-made kitchens consist of low quality, economies-of-scale materials which tend to wear prematurely. Yes - bespoke kitchens may be more expensive than their flat-pack cousins, but due to their durability in the long run - they’re made to last.

Because of their unique nature, bespoke kitchens don’t benefit from incremental bulk buying savings as off-the-shelf kitchens do, so it makes sense for the highest quality materials to be used.

Plus, as bespoke kitchens are made to order, it’s components are usually sourced locally. This means less waiting times if replacements are needed during installation, as well as lowering the likelihood of damage during transport. And of course, you’re supporting small, local makers rather than big corporations.

Compared to standard fitted kitchens, every element of bespoke designs has been uniquely considered and constructed with love - and it shows. Superior craftsmanship shines through with bespoke kitchens.

So there we have it. Bespoke kitchens are an opportunity for you to put your unique stamp on the beating heart of your home. They allow for maximisation of space, and a chance to transform an otherwise awkward room into a unique installation.

Although more pricey, bespoke kitchen’s high quality is built to last. Architectured around your lifestyle, they save you time and energy by creating a space for you to flow in your kitchen, just the way you like it.
